As a migrant from England, Tom fell in love with Australia's unique flora and fauna. He felt that the way in which man treated nature was deplorable and felt he had to do something about it. The Sanctuary was founded on his concern and passion for wildlife and his belief that it should be enjoyed and protected. Tom often felt that education is the key to conservation, and that it was important to involve children as it was their heritage.
Unfortunately, it wasn't until the 1960's that Australians began to pay serious attention to the loss of wildlife. The decreasing numbers of wildlife and in some cases, extinction of some animals led people to start taking an interest in conservation. The concerns raised since the 60's came too late to save some species of animals.
The Sanctuary has had a strong belief on conservation since the beginning. Following in the ideals of Tom, the Sanctuary has a policy of running and building a Sanctuary which doesn't intrude into the nature surrounding it.
